What to look for in a preschool: Your child’s first home away from home

Choosing a preschool can feel overwhelming, especially when every program has their unique differences. As a former special education teacher turned preschool teacher and a mom of two littles, I know how personal this decision can be. Whether you’re preparing your toddler for their very first drop-off or looking to switch to a new program, here are the key things in my opinion to look for when choosing a preschool that is the right fit.

1. Warm, consistent relationships

I believe every young child should be immersed in a community of people who love them for who they are. Your child’s confidence comes from connection, patience, and a space where mistakes are welcome. Look for a preschool where teachers meet the children where they are at, get to know them personally, and create a welcoming environment for all.

💡 Tip: On your tour, ask these questions. What is something that you do to get to know each child individually? What is something you say when a child makes a mistake?

2. Play-Based, Purposeful Learning

Preschool shouldn’t look like kindergarten. The best programs are learn-through-play based where they embrace hands-on play, sensory exploration, and open-ended materials that spark curiosity. This helps build creativity, confidence, and foundational skills.

👀 Look for: dramatic play, sensory bins, messy plan and outdoor time!

3. Predictable Routine & Flexibility

Young children feel most secure when their day has a rhythm with room for flexibility. Ask about daily schedules that balance structure (circle time, meals, rest) but above all else, ask when your child has the opportunity to play freely and creativity.

🔁 Bonus: Ask how they transition between activities. Is it calm and child-led?

4. Clean, Inviting environment

You don’t need Pinterest-perfect classrooms, but the space should feel safe, clean, and thoughtfully set up for little learners. Look for calm colors, accessible materials that are at child-height, and artwork that shows meaningful displays made by the children.

5. Values that align with your family

Every preschool has a unique personality. Some are faith-based, nature-based, Montessori-inspired, or academic-focused. Choose a program whose philosophy feels right for your family and parenting style.

❤️ Ask: “What is your program’s main philosophy?”  “How do you handle big feelings?” or “What’s your approach to conflict between children?”

6. Teacher experience + Low ratios

Ask about staff experience, training, and ratios. Small groups allow teachers to give more attention and meet individual needs.

🍎 For preschool-aged children, ideal ratios are 1 adult per 6–8 children.

Trust your gut. You know your child best and finding a preschool that matches their learning style and your values makes all the difference.
